Time flies, the summer season is almost over. Hopefully, you have enjoyed the Finnish summer weather here and/or had a great vacation.

As you might know already, we are going to have one BIG event, “Discover Thailand” at Helsinki Railway station square on 2nd of September starting from 12.00-20.00.

This event is said to be the biggest promotional event for Thailand in Finland.

Calling to Thailand...by Ballad

This review is about the different ways to call back to Thailand, mainly about calling through the internet (PC to Phone). There’re many softwares providing the function to call back to

Thailand

but of course, you have to pay some money.

1. VoIPDISCOUNT (http://www.voipdiscount.com)
As I searching for those softwares, the cheapest one at this moment is VoIPDISCOUNT (http://www.voipdiscount.com)

As you can see, the rate is free but before you pay, you can use as a trial for 40 minutes. You can also register as a new account but not so many times you can register because I believe that they can check something like IP address, registry, whatever and not allow you to register from that computer anymore. The registration can be done only from the program which you can download from this age, http://www.voipdiscount.com/en/download.html.

After the installation, when you run the program at the first time, it will ask you to register as a new user or logon as an existing user.

After you logon, the interface of the program looks like this.

If you want to make a call, go to dial tab. For calling to Thailand, press 0066 (00 means make an international call, as I understand, and 66 is Thailand code). For example, if you want to make a call to telephone number 01-234567, drop the first 0 out so it should be 006611234567 and press the green button and enjoy your chatting!

In order to make a call to Thailand unlimited, you have to pay 10 euros + 16% tax = 11.6 euros. Your credit will be available for 120 days and you can use that credit make a call to anywhere in the world! (because calling to

Thailand

is free so your credit won’t decrease). Buying a credit can be done by many ways, for example, VISA, AMEX, MasterCard, PayPal, or even normal bank transfer. There is also paying by VISA Electron available but it doesn’t work (as I have tried before).

You can start buying credit from this page http://www.voipdiscount.com/en/buycredits.html. Logon with your account and it will has a pop-up window.

Choose “Buy Credit” and follow the instruction. I think it is quite common like purchasing something or paying through VISA card in e-commerce website. For bank transfer, after you click that you would like to buy a credit by bank transfer, they’ll show you reference number. You have to inform them this number while you’re transferring the money in order to let them know that who’s transferring and it might take up to 7 days in processing.

After try using this program, the sound when calling to landline is excellent and not delayed. For calling to mobile, the sound is sometimes not clear and delayed. It’s maybe depended on the network status at that time and also the mobile network in Thailand too.

2. Internetcalls (http://www.internetcalls.com)
There are many others VoIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) programs provided from different company. Another interesting one is from Internetcalls, (http://www.internetcalls.com). The feature of the program is the same as VoIPDISCOUNT but the rate is a little bit different. It has the same rate for calling to landline in Thailand but it cost 2 cent per minute for calling to mobile phone. The quality is, can say that, the same as VoIPDISCOUNT because I noticed that they are from the same company.

3. VoIPBuster (http://www.voipbuster.com)
This is another VoIP program from http://www.voipbuster.com. It looks similar to two previous programs but gives higher rate. Free for calling to landline but 6 cent per minute for calling to mobile. I haven’t try this one so I cannot tell about the quality

4. CallThai (http://www.callthai.net)
This is only Thai program which I’ve tried. It seems that it uses SIP technology. The rate for calling to Bangkok landline is 1 cent (USD) per minute and for other provinces and mobile is 5 cent per minute. It charges 15 cent on the first minute and round up every 3 minutes, for example, if you call 4 minutes it will cost like 6 minutes+15 cent. About the quality, normally it’s not delay but the sound is usually not very clear. For more information, visit http://www.callthai.net. They’re also sell the calling card to use with mobile too but I haven’t tried it also.

5. Skype (http://www.skype.com)
A widely used program, http://www.skype.com, can also make a call to phone too but you have to buy credits for calling. Someone who has tried this program said that it’s a little bit delay but the voice is ok. The rate for calling to Bangkok is 5 cent per minute and for other provinces and mobile is around 9 cent per minute.

6. Calling card
I don’t know much information about this option but there’re many companies selling calling card with different rate. These are some examples,

7. TeleAle (http://www.teleale.com)
This is a rather nice way to make a call too. You can directly call from your phone by pressing the number 99533 before the country code following by area code without 0 and then telephone number, for example, 995336611234567. For calling to Thailand, the rate is 6 cent + local call rate. You don’t have to register for anything and no monthly fee. For more information, visit http://www.teleale.com

Editor’s Choice: VoIPDISCOUNT because of its very cheap rate (10 euros and you can make unlimited call) and acceptable quality but it has to make a call from computer.

ขอมาตอบแบบ (กึ่ง)วิชาการนะครับ

วิธีการออกเสียงปัจจัยอดีตกาลของภาษาอังกฤษ

การออกเสียงปัจจัยชนิดนี้ (สะกดด้วย -ed เป็นส่วนใหญ่) มีหลักว่าให้ดูเสียงที่มาข้างหน้าปัจจัยตัวนี้ เพราะว่าเสียงที่มาข้างหน้า จะเป็นปัจจัยที่ทำให้เกิดการเปลี่ยนเเปลงเสียงที่ตามมาข้างหลัง (assimilation ของปัจจัย ed นั่นเอง)

สังเกตว่า ผมพูดคำว่า เสียง นะครับ ไม่ใช่ตัวสะกด เช่น คำว่า rowed (พายเรือ) เสียงที่มาข้างหน้าปัจจัย -ed คือเสียงสระ โอ ไม่ใช่ พยัญชนะ w นะครับ หรือตัวสะกด s ในคำว่า rose นั่นถือว่าอ่านเป็นเสียง z นะครับ (คือเสียงก้อง) ไม่ใช่เสียง s ธรรมดา

กรณีที่ หนึ่ง -ed ออกเสียงเป็น d (ดึ) ถ้าเสียงที่มาข้างหน้าเป็นเสียงโฆษะ หรือเสียงก้อง เช่น เสียง v, th, z, g, j, และสระทุกเสียง เช่น

crazed, caved, clothed, clogged, caged, rowed, photoed ทุกตัวออกเสียง เป็น ตัว /d/ หรือ ดึ หมด เช่น เครสดึ เคฟดึ โคลธดึ คล้อกดึ ฯลฯ เพราะว่า เสียงที่มาข้างหน้าทุกตัวเป็นเสียงก้อง จึงทำให้ปัจจัย ed ต้องออกเสียงเป็นเสียงก้องตาม (นั่นคือ เสียง d)

กรณีที่สอง ถ้าเสียงที่มาข้างหน้าเป็นเสียงที่ไม่ก้อง หรือเสียง อโฆษะ มีผลให้เสียง ed ตามมาเป็นเสียงไม่ก้องด้วย นั่นคือ เสียง t หรือ ทึ นั่นเอง เสียงไม่ก้องเช่นเสียง p, k, f, th, s, ch และอื่นๆ เช่น stopped, kicked, kissed, churched เป็นต้น ออกเป็น สต๊อปทึ คิกคึทึ (ถ่ายทอดเสียงเป็นไทยได้ดีที่สุดเท่านี้นะครับ)

กรณีสุดท้าย ถ้าเสียงที่มาก่อนหน้าเป็นเสียง t หรือ d ให้เติมสระ อิ หรือ เอิด หน้าปัจจัย ed เช่น wanted, needed อ่านเป็น ว้อนทิด นีดดิด (หรือ ว้อนเทิ่ด นี้ดเดิ่ด เป็นต้น)

เหตุผลที่ต้องเพิ่มเสียงสระอิเข้าไปนั้น เนื่องจาก เสียง t และ d ในกรณีนี้จะทำให้ออกเสียงได้ลำบากเวลาไม่ใส่ สระ เช่น ถ้าอ่านตามหลักสองข้อข้างบน จะได้เป็น wanted ว้อนทึทึ (เพราะว่า เสียง t เป็นเสียงไม่ก้อง เพราะฉะนั้น เสียงที่ตามมาก็ต้องกลายเป็นเสียงไม่ก้อง หรือเสียง t ไปด้วย) จะเห็นว่า ว้อนทึทึนั้นออกเสียงลำบาก เจ้าของภาษาเลยเติมเสียงสระไปคั่นกลางเพื่อให้ได้พยางค์ใหม่ กลายเป็น ว้อนทิด ไปโดยปริยาย

คำยกเว้นต่างๆ เช่น legged, crooked, learned พวกนี้ไม่เป็นตามกฏข้างบน กล่าวคือต้องเติมสระ อิ เข้าไปคั่นกลางด้วย เพราะฉะนั้นคำเหล่านี้อ่านเป็น เล็คกิด ครุกกิด และ เลินนิด เป็นต้น (สังเกตว่าคำเหล่านี้ไม่ใช่กริยา และเป็นคำคุณศัพท์ครับ เลยไม่เป็นไปตามกฏ เช่น he is a learned man ฮี อิส อะ เลิร์นนิด แมน ซึ่งต่างจาก I have learned a great deal ไอ แฮฟ เลินดึ อะเกรทดีล)

หวังว่าคงช่วยได้ สิ่งสำคัญคือ ต้องรู้ว่า เสียงที่มาข้างหน้าปัจจัยเป็นเสียง ก้อง หรือ ไม่ก้อง ครับ และไม่ใช่ดูที่ตัวสะกด ต้องดูที่การออกเสียงจริง ๆ (เช่น rose หรือ nose นั้น สะกดเป็น s แต่เสียงจริงๆ คือ z นะครับ )

หมายเหตุ คำว่า rose อ่านออกเสียงเหมือน rows และ nose ออกเสียงเหมือน knows ครับ ลองไปคิดกันเล่นๆว่าทำไมครับ

Bayerisches Geoinstitut, University of Bayreuth, Germany invites
applications for the "Atomic to Global" training programme funded by the
European Union under the Marie Curie Action for Early Stage Training of
Researchers. The positions available are:
(a) short-term fellowships (3-12 months)
(b) Ph.D. fellowships (3 years)
and involve a diverse range of projects that focus on the physics and
chemistry of Earth materials, and how structure and interactions at the
atomic scale translate to an understanding of bulk properties and global
processes. The training programme involves projects carried out under the
close supervision of internationally acknowledged experts using
state-of-the-art equipment, and includes complementary training activities
such as academic courses, seminar presentations, weekend seminars and
active participation at national and international conferences. Three
Ph.D. fellowships are available in 2006 and up to four short term
fellowships per year are available in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Applicants for the "Atomic to Global" training programme should have a
strong quantitative background in materials sciences, physics, chemistry,
Earth sciences or related disciplines, and demonstrate prior ability for
independent research and work. Applicants from all countries may be
considered, subject to eligibility and mobility requirements and the
constraint that no more than 30% of the fellowship months can be awarded
to researchers from countries outside the EU Member and Associated States.
Briefly the eligibility and mobility criteria for an early stage
researcher stipulate:
*possession of a masters degree or equivalent, but not a Ph.D.
*less than 4 years research experience
*no more than 12 out of the previous 36 months resident in Germany
*not a German citizen, unless at least 4 out of the previous 5 years was
spent outside of Germany

Helsinki in 2days by Ballad

My last trip to Helsinki has been planned since last year and I have been there on January 13-14, 2006. The trip started by booking hostel, Eurohostel in Katajanokka, and buying “Helsinki Card” which I found later that it can save money for only “honest” tourist through internet. I went to Helsinki by ExpressBus and it cost 19.90€ from Lappeenranta. I was wonder because actually, with student card, I can get discount 50% and its price should be only 15.70€ but after took the bus for around 4 hours from 2:40 a.m. to 6:55 a.m., I arrived to Helsinki anyway. It was still dark at that time and every place were not opened yet so we could only walk around and found the way to the hostel. I arrived to Eurohostel (www.eurohostel.fi) around 9 a.m. I got triple backpacker room which cost 18.80€/person who held an International Hostelling Membership Card or ISIC Card. The receptionist was very kind. He gave me the room at that time (normal time when we can check in is 12:00) so I could left my stuff in the room. That made me able to travel more comfortable. Next, I went to the Tourist Center to get the Helsinki Card (you can find information from http://www.helsinkiexpert.com). I showed the confirmation e-mail of purchasing this card online which I have printed to the officer and she did not check anything. She just received that and wrote something on that document, not even checked the order number, and gave me the card. I could realize at that time that Finnish people is very honest because that document can be faked very easy. However… my trip started.

Vanhanen Wants More Foreigners in Finland

Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen said he would like to see more foreign workers in Finland. He also wants more foreigners to study in Finland.

Speaking at a seminar in Oulu on Monday, Vanhanen said changing immigration laws would allow businesses to maintain their operations in Finland.

The prime minister, who is not satisfied with the rate at which immigration practices are changing, said welfare levels could be preserved with the help of workers from other countries.

Vanhanen added that faster processing of work permits would make Finland more attractive to foreign workers.

Foreign students in Finland often remain isolated in their own communities, with little contact with Finnish society.
Matti Taajamo, a researcher in educational science, writes in a doctoral dissertation that he defended at the University of Jyv?skyl? on Saturday, that foreigners studying in Finland need to become much more acquainted with Finnish life and business practices if Finland wants to encourage them to stay in this country to work after graduation.
"The human relationships of foreign students are limited to the student world. They do not get into ordinary Finnish everyday life, so they spend their free time with other foreigners. Nevertheless, the students would like to learn to know Finnish culture better.

For his study, Taajamo interviewed exchange students and other foreign students at the University of Jyv?skyl?, and the University of Art and Design, Finnish students, as well as teaching and administrative personnel in 2000 and 2001.
Foreign students at the University of Art and Design appreciated field trips that were arranged to Finnish companies.
"Companies in Finland do not yet know how to make use of foreign students. For instance, in Jyv?skyl?, the universities markets them to companies, but the companies are not interested. Nevertheless, it would be important for them to become better acquainted with working life and to get trainee positions, so that more foreign students might be attracted to come to Finland."
Students interviewed by Taajamo were especially pleased with a programme at the University of Jyv?skyl? that links foreign students with Finnish families. Taajamo feels that it would be good if the model would spread to the whole country. He emphasises that contact with local families is important for foreigners, especially in the early stages.
"It allows the student to learn about Finnish life, go to the movies, or pick berries in the forest. Families made it possible to talk about cultural differences and the problems that they bring. I believe that there would be enthusiastic ordinary families for this purpose all around."

Taajamo says that Finnish students rarely take part in English-language instruction, where it would be possible to forge good contacts with foreign students.
"Finns are still shy about their English language skills - for no good reason; foreign students think that Finns speak English well."
Taajamo urges universities to increase teaching in English. Some fields do not have any classes in English. "There is still a long way to go before there is a real threat of the disappearance of Finnish."

Although foreign students are disappointed with the lack of friendships with Finns, they feel that the teachers here are easy to approach.
Academic freedom was confusing at first, but when they got used to it, the possibility to plan one’s studies independently felt good. In the case of exchange students, Taajamo feels that Finnish universities have a long way to go before courses passed in Finland will benefit the students in their home countries.

Nine Finnish and Russian universities planning joint degrees

Five universities in Finland and four in Russia are planning to establish cooperation which would allow students to complete common degrees.
The Cross Border University project began this year, and its results are to be assessed in late 2007, when the possibility of common doctorate programmes is to be considered.
Minister of Education Antti Kalliom?ki (SDP) met with Russia’s Minister of Education and Science Andrei Fursenko in Moscow on Tuesday.

Finland and Russia are trying to establish equivalent academic degrees that follow the principles of the Bologna Declaration, which urges the establishment of common degrees between different countries.
Russia joined the process of establishing a European region for higher education in 2003.
The schools involved in the joint project with Russia are the universities of Helsinki, Tampere, Kuopio, and Joensuu, as well as the Technical University of Lappeenranta. The project is being coordinated by the University of Joensuu.
Russian participants include St. Petersburg State University, the St. Petersburg Technical State University, the European University of St. Petersburg, and the University of Petrozavodsk.

English-language masters’ programmes are planned for international politics, information technology, commercial science, public health, history, as well as forestry and bioenergy technology.
Nuclear physics, cryogenics, nanotechnology, space research, and information technology are seen as promising areas in scientific and technological cooperation.
The two ministers feel that more cooperation is needed in the commercial applications of research and technology.

It was a very beautiful day in Helsinki. Today Mu, P'paper and me decided to go out to walk in town, although it was a bit late. All the xmas ceromony had been finished, but still lots of people in town! The atmophere was brillant. I feel that everyone looked happy, everywhere I looked people were smiling. Cannot believe that this is Finland :)

"Research From Bangkok to the Blue Nile"

The Viikki Tropical Resources Institute (former Tropical Silviculture Unit) was established at the Department of Forest Ecology, University of Helsinki, in 1980, as a research group for educational and research collaboration especially with Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand. This cooperation had started already in 1966 as a scholarship programme for Thai students in Finland. By 1984, when the professorship in tropical silviculture was established at University of Helsinki, VITRI had become involved in afforestation and tree nursery projects supported by the Finnish government in Indonesia, the Sudan and Kenya. Other essential tasks were forest researcher education for the partner countries andsupport to their institutions, as well as the training of Finnish tropical foresters and forest researchers. From Southeast Asia and eastern Africa the activities have later expanded to Central America, China and West Africa. Presently, VITRI has ongoing research activities also in Costa Rica, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Ghana.

The present research topics at VITRI include, both in humid and dry regions, the regeneration and successional dynamics of trees in natural forests; forest tree eco-physiology and population genetics; agroforestry system management and modelling; and the rehabilitation of natural forests and agricultural production systems. Strong institutional links are maintained especially with Kasetsart University, Bangkok (Thailand), Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center (CATIE) (Costa Rica), Nanjing Forestry University (China); and the Forests National Corporation and the Forestry Research Centre of the Agricultural Research Corporation (both in Sudan). VITRI is actively involved in the European Tropical Forest Research Network (ETFRN) and collaborating with several European countries.

VITRI has been led since its establishment by Dr Olavi Luukkanen, professor of tropical silviculture. In addition, the unit consists of a lecturer in tropical silviculture and about ten researchers or doctoral students, and Finnish and international M.Sc. students specializing in tropical silviculture. VITRI publishes its own international journal, "University of Helsinki Tropical Forestry Reports", with 22 volumes printed as the end of 2001.

Extending the residence permit

The application for the residence permit extension needs to be submitted to the police station of your place of residence. At the police station you need to fill out the Residence Permit application form.

To extend your residence in Finland, the application has to be submitted to the police at the latest on the day when the validity of your current residence permit ends. However, the extension application can be submitted already 3 months before the current permit expires.

University of Helsinki improves its standing in global ranking of academic institution

Grading of scholars had significant impact on results

The University of Helsinki significantly improved its standing on the global and European ranking of academic institutions published by The Times Higher Education Supplement.
Of the 200 top universities worldwide, Finland's leading university came in at 62nd, up from 129th last year. Among the top European institutions of higher education, the University of Helsinki improved its ranking from 62nd to 18th.
The THES published its World University Rankings for the second year running.

Another Finnish institute, the Helsinki University of Technology, came in 194th. Last year it was ranked at No.176.
The world's top five universities are Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Oxford, and Stanford.
The THES ranking is based on six criteria. The largest weight is on the so-called peer-review data, which accounts for 40 percent of the available score in the ranking.
The sample used to compile the peer-review section consisted of 2,375 research-active academics.

Opinions of major international employers of academics were also taken into account when deciding on the order of superiority of the seats of learning. This group included banks, airlines, and industrial establishments.

Other ranking criteria included the staff-to-student ratio, and the number of citations for academic papers generated by staff members. This gives an indication of the universities' research prowess.

The University of Helsinki was the highest-ranking institution in the Nordic Countries on the THES list. This compares with another listing, produced in Shanghai, in which a number of Swedish universities outperform their Finnish counterparts.

The newspaper argues that the criteria used in its evaluation centre on features that should be common to "global institutions".

Finnish Universities Should Ensure Continuity of Their Virtual University Activities and Promote Further Development Nationwide

Helsinki, 31 October, 2005 — The Finnish Virtual University Consortium decided in its September meeting to recommend that universities should take the appropriate measures to ensure that their own virtual university activities continue to progress. Universities were also recommended to participate in the further development of FVU and prepare to allocate some of their own resources to joint FVU projects starting in 2007. Until now, universities have gained funding from the Ministry of Education for virtual university projects. The project funding period will end in 2006.

The FVU Consortium engaged in an extensive discussion on the funding principles of the consortium in the post-2007 period. The FVU Steering Group will draft a proposal for a consortium fee and a new governance structure, to be discussed at the next consortium meeting on February 8, 2006.

Issue Groups to Plan Activities

One of the activities outlined in the FVU strategy includes initiating a new kind of taskforce called the Issue Groups. The FVU Issue Groups are working groups composed of university experts. Their mandate is to plan the implementation of the FVU strategy, to develop project maps for its implementation, and to keep an eye on the progress of future university projects. One Issue Group has been established for each of the FVU’s strategic targets:

- Facilitating flexible studies and developing electronic service access for this purpose
- Promoting the shared use of online education and educational materials
- Developing jointly-used ICT training and ICT support services
- Integrating the FVU operations into the European Higher Education Area and other international co-operation
- Developing the FVU organization, operating modes, decision making, and financing models.

The first term of office of the Issue Groups will extend until the meeting of the FVU Consortium on February 8, 2006, and their most important task is to draw up an implementation programme for the FVU strategy. Moreover, the first term will also involve the task of planning the future work of the Issue Groups during the strategy period 2005-2010.

ตามกำหนดการมาเยือนยุโรป 5 ประเทศอย่างเป็นทางการของ พ.ต.ท.ทักษิณ ชินวัตร นายกรัฐมนตรีและคณะ ระหว่างวันที่ 9-16 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2548 เมื่อวันที่ 14 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2548 นายกรัฐมนตรี ทักษิณ ชินวัตร และคณะได้เดินทางถึง ที่กรุงเฮลซิงกิ ประเทศฟินแลนด์ และได้เข้าเยี่ยมคารวะประธานาธิบดี Tarja Halonen แห่งสาธารณรัฐฟินแลนด์ นอกจากนั้นนายกรัฐมนตรีได้หารือข้อราชการกับนายกรัฐมนตรี Matti Vanhanen ในวันเดียวกันด้วย หลังจากนั้น นายกรัฐมนตรี และบุคคลสำคัญฝ่ายไทยอื่นๆ ได้ร่วมเป็นสักขีพยาน การลงนามความตกลงร่วมมือระหว่างภาคเอกชนไทยและฟินแลนด์ เพื่อจัดตั้งกองทุน Finn-Thai Technology Fund ซึ่งเป็นการลงนามระหว่าง บริษัท ทีโอที จำกัด มหาชน กับ Finnish Industry Invesment ทั้งนี้ กองทุนดังกล่าวจะช่วยส่งเสริมความร่วมมือในเชิงธุรกิจระหว่างไทยและฟินแลนด์ในประเทศไทยและภูมิภาคอาเซียน เพื่อการพัฒนาในสาขาเทคโนโลยีและการสื่อสาร เช่น ระบบเตือนภัยสึนามิล่วงหน้า

และในโอกาสเดียวกัน นายกรัฐมนตรีทักษิณ ชินวัตร ประกาศเชิญชวนญาติผู้เสียชีวิตชาวฟินแลนด์ในเหตุการณ์สึนามิ ไปร่วมงานรำลึก 1 ปีเหตุการณ์สึนามิ ในวันที่ 26 ธ.ค.นี้ โดยรัฐบาลไทยจะออกบัตรเชิญผ่านรัฐบาลของประเทศที่มีผู้ประสบภัย และเปิดเว็บไซต์เพื่อให้ลงทะเบียน ทั้งนี้ รัฐบาลไทยจะออกค่าใช้จ่ายทั้งหมดให้แก่ผู้ที่เดินทางมาร่วมงาน

สถานีวิทยุเฮลซิงกิ ได้จัดโครงการช้างเผือก (จริงๆแล้ว ไม่รู้ว่าชื่อโครงการอะไร :)) เอาคนที่ไม่เคยเล่นสกีมาก่อน มาหัดเล่นสกี เพื่อสงเข้าประกวด เอ้ย...เข้าร่วมการแข่งขันสกีมาราธอน (ระยะทางประมาณ 60 กิโลเมตร) ที่จะจัดขึ้นที่จังหวัด Lahti ในต้นปี 2006 แล้วงานนี้ มีสาวไทยใจเด็ดและบ้าบิ่น ได้เข้าร่วมโครงการนี้ด้วย เธอคนนี้คือ 'ปอ' เพื่อนของเรานี่เอง การที่เธอได้เข้าร่วมโครงการนี้ ก็ทำให้ชีวิตของเธอเปลี่ยนไป

Master's Programme in IT Engineering Now Permanent in the University of Turku

Helsinki, 18 October, 2005 — In Turku Centre for Computer Science, TUCS, a joint organization involving the University of Turku, the Turku School of Economics and Business Administration, and ?bo Akademi University, a master's programme in IT engineering has achieved permanent status in West Finland. The new IT experts graduating in Turku will ensure Turku, and Finland, a head start in research in the years to come. The IT centre can engage in globally competitive applied research and product development with companies in South-West Finland.

The Turku Centre for Computer Science is in an excellent position to respond to the product development challenge coming not only from Europe and the USA but also from India and China, as approximately one third of the TUCS doctoral students have come to Turku from outside of Finland. The TUCS entrance requirement is a bachelor's level IT degree and instruction is given principally in English in the Master's and doctoral programmes. TUCS's strength is in its broad base: algorithms, electronics, mathematics, and communication technology. The TUCS organisation has 35 professors of IT – two of these positions by donation – and 50 other researchers and faculty members with doctoral degrees.

The companies are expecting TUCS to play a more prominent role in defining IT research objectives among the universities, municipalities and companies. Indeed, TUCS is currently working on several major R & D programmes which would determine the companies' long-term objectives and on which the top IT know-how in Finland would be utilised. The recent analysis by ICT Turku of IT objectives in South West Finland also supports the strengthening of IT activity.

TUCS has hitherto operated at various locations in the premises of its founding institutions. The ICT building due to be completed in summer 2006 will facilitate the realisation of TUCS objectives, bringing the whole of TUCS under the same roof. TUCS is moreover endeavouring to reorganise its funding. The funding from the Ministry of Education for the first Finnish graduate school is paramount, but the aim is to expand and ensure commitment with sub regional, Academy of Finland, companies', TEKES and EU in funding of IT experts and international partners to productive, global development work in the field of IT.

Since 2002 Turku Centre for Computer Science has been led by Professor Timo J?rvi, who retired at the beginning of September. According to Professor J?rvi, resources are being wasted in the IT field in Finland by making too many ineffective and poorly compatible information systems. For example, different hospital districts of Finland are simultaneously developing different systems and the municipalities are also being offered disparate systems by several producers. The aim should be to accept the common good, basic information systems created through national co-operation. These would make it possible to achieve international competitiveness.

เวลาจะได้กลับบ้านเนี่ย มันตื่นเต้นดึใจยังไงก็ไม่รู้นะ เป็นกันบ้างมั้ย??? สำหรับคนที่กลับบ่อยๆ คงเฉยๆ แต่เรากลับแค่ปีละครั้งเอง เวลาที่เหยียบลงจากเครื่องไอความร้อนวูบๆ ก็มาปะทะกะตัวเลย ก็รู้เลย ว่าถึงบ้านแล้ว พอได้ยินประกาศที่สนามบิน แล้วก็ป้ายภาษาไทย มันก็อบอุ่นดีจังเลย ถึงอินทีเรีย และบรรยากาศมันจะไม่สะอาดหรู แต่ก็บ้านเราอะ วุ่นวาย แต่มีสีสัน
เวลาจากมานานๆ มันโหยหาทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างยังไงก็ไม่รู้ (โดยเฉพาะของกิน) แน่นอน ต้องวางแผน ที่ไม่เคยพลาดเลยก็คือทำลิสต์ว่าอยากกินอะไรบ้าง และที่ไหนบ้าง ตะก่อนเป็นคนที่ตามกระแส เค้าชอบอะไร ไปไหนกันเราก็ลองด้วยไปหมด เดี๋ยวนี้ห่างเมืองไทยมาก็กลายเป็นหลังเขาไปเลย ก็เลยนึกไรใหม่ๆไม่ค่อยออก ลิสต์ก็ยืมของปีที่แล้วเอา เล่นง่ายๆ

จริงๆแล้วสมาคมคนไทย หรือสมาคมที่เกี่ยวข้องกะเมืองไทย มีประมาณ 8 สมาคมค่ะ (อย่างของพวกเราเป็นแค่ชุมชนออนไลน์เท่านั้น ไม่ได้จดทะเทียนค่ะ) วันนี้ขอแนะนำสมาคมฟินนิช-ไทย (The Finnish Thai Association )ก่อนนะคะ

Buddhist temple being set up near Helsinki; Thais in Finland get first monk

The cheerfully smiling Buddhist monk Mahanuen Chamnaunrum welcomes his guests to his home in Sipoo, east of Helsinki. The handshake and the smile exude typical Thai friendliness.
"Basically, I live alone, but every day people come here to help and to pray", he says.
Wearing the traditional orange robes, Mahanuen Chamnaunrum is the religious leader of about 1,700 Thais who live in Finland.

The monk wakes up every morning before six. After the morning prayer and meditation comes breakfast, time for reading, and lunch at 11:00. All those who are visiting Chamnaunrum can share in the lunch.
After midday he eats no more meals that day. In the early evening there is another moment for prayer and meditation.
During prayers the others who are present also kneel on the altar rug.
Mahanuen Chamnaunrum is the first Buddhist monk in Finland. In addition to his native Thailand, he has lived in Sweden and Alaska.

The house in Sipoo is to be made into Finland's first Buddhist temple. "Many things are required of a temple, for which official permission is still needed. One of these is a large statue of The Buddha to be placed outside, for which permission has been applied from the Municipality of Sipoo", says Malee Lapvetel?inen, chairwoman of the Finland-Thai-Buddha society.
The statue already exists, and it has been placed in a temporary location outside. "The statue was donated by a family living in Thailand", Malee Lapvetel?inen explains.
Another large gold-plated statue of The Buddha is inside the building at the altar.
"It was donated by a Thai family that lives here", Lapvetel?inen explains.

The association bought the large house in Sipoo near the new highway to Porvoo a year ago. The monk's residence and future temple cost about 170,000 euros, and about one third of the debt has already been paid off.
Contributors have included individual Thais living in Finland. Somewhat larger contributions have come from Thai entrepreneurs, including restaurant owners and Thai massage parlours.
A considerable amount of money has come from Thailand - from a number of sources, including monk Chamnaunrum's personal contacts. In his own home region he is quite a well-known spiritual figure who once had his own radio programme on a religious radio station in Thailand.
Even today he wakes up in the early hours of the morning from time to time to take part in a live broadcast. It has been through the radio that people living in Thailand have been persuaded to donate tens of thousands of euros for the establishment of a temple in Finland.
The association also raised money by organising festivals. Top Thai stars have come to perform in Helsinki for almost no money.

It is very important for Finland's Thai community to have its own temple with its own monk.
"In the future we will be able to have large religious festivals, and when we get a temple, we will also be able to hold Buddhist funerals", Malee Lapvetel?inen says.
The Finnish Thai community is very closely-knit. "We often meet in homes, and food is as important a part of interaction as coffee is for Finns", Malee Lapvetel?inen points out.
She herself moved to Finland 25 years ago and was among the first Thais to live here.
"At that time I felt lonely, but now things are different, as there are others here in Finland as well."
